Taking risks is what makes life so exciting. Sometimes, you just have to roll the dice to make the discovery of a pleasant surprise all the more amazing. You’ll have no shot at winning if you don’t have the guts to gamble. Yes, life, at times, requires you to say the heck with it, let’s shuffle the cards. But if you play games with alcohol abuse, it will never give you a nice hand.
Drinking and driving is one of the ways many people, especially young ones, take on to taunt life. Bolstered by a very false sense of invincibility and immortality, they throw caution to the wind and steer the wheel. But, alcohol and driving must never be mixed together. It has a reputation of leading a person to the road to destruction.
Because it’s a depressant, alcohol blunts the cognitive abilities of a person. That’s why driving drunk is a stupid idea.
Driving under the influence of alcohol will decrease your ability to react to situations properly and rationally. When the light changes from green to red or when people cross the street, you may not be able to step on the brake as swiftly as you can when sober. And that difference in seconds can mean the difference between life and death. Blurred visions would be common, too. Night vision and color perception may be affected, leaving you wondering if the traffic light is telling you to stop or to go. The rapt attention so necessary to driving won’t be evident in a drunk driver, as well. Drowsiness is also another dangerous side effect. Imagine closing your eyes inside your car on a superhighway. Poor judgement would ensue, making it hard to distinguish a moving car from a tree in the center island. And crucial eye-hand-foot coordination would be threatened, which is almost tantamount to riding shotgun beside a two-year-old driver.
Alcohol fuels bad decisions. And if it’s mixed with otehr substances like sleeping pills, stimulants, prescription medicine and marijuana, the deadly effects are doubled.
There’s a fine line between being adventurous and being reckless. Alcohol abuse blurs that line. If you listen to the call of the bottle, when you should fold, that’s short of saying you will raise the stakes on your own life even to a level you can’t deal with anymore until suddenly, you realize you’ve lost and that you’re already out of the game.
