Over time, humanity has consistently shown an alarming trait that neither affirms our evolutionary status nor suggests good human development ~ the ability to engage in semi-conscious self-destruction. And one of the most blatant examples of this is the compulsive need some people have for anything alcoholic.
Alcoholism or alcohol addiction is the state in which a person feels the incessant urge to intoxicate his/herself with any alcoholic drink. It is manifested when one’s physical, mental and social functions are affected by constant inebriation from beer, wine or other hard liquors, and (not to mention) when one completely denies the wisdom of the phrase “drink moderately”.
Many factors contribute to the development of alcoholism in a person. The pressure exerted by peers is one of the very common. It may take on a subtle form or it may be too obvious but the bottom line is that the stressed soul may be confused into thinking that true friendship only exists when every member of your social circle has puked the night away with each other. Culture, as well, can take the blame. In a world where cocktail hours are viewed as status symbols, a person could be inclined to have more than one highball to assert his/her sophistication. Other factors include genetic make-up, family history and psychological vulnerability.
There’s not much debate on the bad effects of addiction to alcohol. Most people who end up inside prison cells have, in the past, succumbed to the call of the bottle more than they should have. Alcoholics, also, are not the most physically fit people in the world. Lifting too much liquid have been proven to increase one’s chances at getting cancer, heart infections and liver problems. And the emotional price of being with an alcoholic proves to me more than what a person can handle, thereby giving rise to more broken homes, shattered relationships and destroyed lives.
But alcoholism can be treated. Quite a number of rehabilitation centers and programs have sprung up all over the globe to lend a helping hand to all wanting throats ~ but that is, if they want it.
